Occupational Therapy
Who We Are:
Our Occupational Therapists (OT’s) use evidence-based practice to build everyday skills in a fun and naturalistic setting. Whenever possible, Occupational Therapists will utilize a play-based approach that maximizes engagement, participation, and learning, and supports generalization of skills to the home, school and community. OT’s work as a team with each family to create a service treatment plan that fits into their lifestyle, builds trust, and helps achieve shared outcomes.
What We Provide:
The Children’s Treatment Centre of Chatham-Kent wants to be your provider of choice. We have provided services in Chatham Kent since 1948 and know that every child and family is unique. We will work with you to develop a plan to meet your family and child’s occupational therapy goals.
Occupational therapy services may be purchased to assess and treat the following developmental needs:
- Self-care skills – Helping children with daily routines such as getting dressed, brushing teeth, feeding themselves (e.g., using utensils), and establishing healthy sleep habits.
- Planning and organization – Supporting children in getting ready for the day, keeping track of tasks, and being prepared for responsibilities.
- Writing skills – Teaching children how to use a pencil, keyboard, or specialized tools to improve their handwriting or typing.
- Fine motor skills – Helping children develop the hand and finger strength needed to use everyday tools like pencils, scissors, or glue.
- Play skills – Encouraging overall development through play, helping children use toys and engage with family and friends in a fun way.
- Visual perception – Working on skills like letter recognition, addressing letter reversals, improving printing, and recognizing patterns.
- Sensory processing – Offering education and strategies for children who may be overly sensitive or less responsive to things like touch, taste, smells, sounds, sights, or movement. This includes looking at how children react to certain foods (feeding sensitivities) or other sensory inputs that affect their daily activities. We can also provide a sensory assessment to better understand and support children with sensory processing difficulties.
Families will collaborate with their Occupational Therapist to develop consultative strategies and recommendations to facilitate functional self-regulation and sensory processing skills. Client Funded Services does not include sensory integration therapy or “desensitization”. One visit is available to complete the sensory assessment. Based on the child’s needs, 1 to 3 follow-up visits are available for consultative strategy sessions.
If your child is already receiving government funded services at the Children’s Treatment Centre of Chatham-Kent or services from another provider, theOccupational Therapist will share information as appropriate, to help ensure everyone is working together to meet client and family goals and needs.
