The occupational therapy program is made up of Occupational Therapists (OTs) and Occupational Therapist Assistants (OTAs). OTs and OTAs work with your child to improve his/her ability to participate in daily activities. These activities may include:
- Play and school work
- Eating, dressing, bathing
- Participating in their community
An OT or OTA will support a child’s participation in activities by improving the child’s skills and/or changing parts of the environment or the task. This may include:
- Working with the child to develop skills (eg. putting on jacket)
- Making changes to the materials being used (eg. add key ring to zipper)
- Recommending changes to the environment (eg. location of cubby at school)
- Providing a different approach to the task (eg. having the child complete the first step of the activity)
OTs and OTAs will work with parents, caregivers, and teachers to support a child’s full participation in daily activities.
