Speech Therapy

Who We Are:

Our Speech and Language Pathologists (SLP’s) use evidence-based practice to build everyday skills in a fun and naturalistic setting. Whenever possible, SLP’s will utilize a play-based approach that maximizes engagement, participation, and learning, and supports generalization of skills to the home, school and community. SLP’s work as a team with each family to create a service treatment plan that fits into their lifestyle, builds trust, and helps achieve shared outcomes.

What We Provide:

The Children’s Treatment Centre of Chatham-Kent wants to be your provider of choice.  We have provided services in Chatham Kent since 1948 and know that every child and family is unique. We will work with you to develop a plan to meet your family and child’s speech therapy goals.

Speech and language services may be purchased to assess and treat the following developmental needs:

  • Language: Ability to understand spoken language (e.g., following directions, answering ‘wh’ questions appropriately), conveying ideas verbally (e.g., expressing wants and needs, commenting, marking grammar and assembling sentences);
  • Speech: Ability to plan and coordinate movements of lips, tongue, jaw, and vocal cords to produce clear speech sounds.
  • Social Communication: Ability to use language and social interaction skills appropriately (e.g., playing appropriately with peers, understanding humor and jokes, starting and ending conversations, taking turns);
  • Fluency/Stuttering: Ability to positively approach communicative interactions and communicate ideas easily and smoothly.
  • Literacy: ability to read words and passages efficiently and accurately and understand written text.

If your child is already receiving government funded services at the Children’s Treatment Centre of Chatham-Kent or services from another provider, the Speech and Language Pathologist will share information as appropriate, to help ensure everyone is working together to meet client and family goals and needs.
